On August 6th and 9th, 1945, 2 explosions leveled the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. The brute destructive force of the atomic fail was the likes of which had never been seen before. The path taken to bring this marvel to recognition was paved with moral scruples and encompassed the collaboration of thousands of brilliant scientist along with allocation of billions of dollars. The massive undertaking was all kept unfathomable under the Umbrella of the US governments net secret proposal, code named the Manhattan Project. How is it that a seemingly dooms-day device came to be and what challenges did this endeavor encounter? I plan to explore the makings of the new-fashioned class of weapon that intimidated nations and presented unparalleled threats to which the world had never experienced before.
Where did the Manhattan project have its origins? It can be argued that the Manhattan project was first conceptualized by a group of physicist, which included Italian physicist Leo Szilard, who feared that atomic research performed by Germany could essentially chance into a weapon of catastrophic power. With this in mind, the visionaries attempted to state the United States President of the realistic impending doom; alas their warnings were not headed (Davidson 2010).



It wasnt until Leo Szilard spoke to Albert Einstein, a scientist with renown like status and political influence, that a letter was drafted which in the end informed Franklin Roosevelt of the possible threat (Gosling 1999).
The president acted quickly, but in its infancy, the eventual massive research project was slow to pickaxe up steam (Davidson 2010). Roosevelts approach was timid at first due to the understanding that Scientists were unable to uncover a method for fissionable matter to obtain critical mass.
